THE four regions of Melbourne will be battling it out for bragging rights at the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association Intergroup Challenge on Sunday.
The Western region will take on the Southern region, while North will play East in 50-over games. Both games will be played at Altona’s Grant Reserve at 10.30am.
The challenge will give the West’s top players a chance to test themselves against the top players from clubs that they don’t get to play against during the season.
The Western team will be chosen from Sunshine, Yarraville, Williamstown, Altona, and Werribee, Melton and Broadmeadows.
After the games, a squad will be chosen for the representative clash between the VSDCA and Victorian Country Cricket League XI on 11 December.
“Most of the top players in the sub district are playing, so were very pleased with that,” VSDCA secretary Ken Hilton said. “The idea was generated by the clubs, it was something they wanted to do.”
An original squad of 16 was chosen, and the final 12 was due to be selected yesterday afternoon after Star’s deadline.
The 16-man West squad, chosen by Anthony Gale of Melton Cricket Club, is: Aaron Maynard (Altona), John Varchione (Altona), Jody Huthenson (Broadmeadows), Asad Vala (Broadmeadows), Michael Allen (Melton), David Kirk (Melton), Nathan Allen (Melton), Shane Harwood (Melton), Brad Jones (Melton), Andrew Webb (Sunshine), Shaun Dean (Werribee), Brenton Hodges (Williamstown), Craig Sheedy (Williamstown), Curtis Maguire (Yarraville).
