MARIBYRNONG City Council has been given some clarity surrounding State Government spending in Footscray, following a $1 million contribution to the Nicholson St mall redevelopment last week.
Planning Minister Justin Madden met mayor Michael Clarke on Thursday to discuss the latest announcement about the $52.1 million renewal project revealed in May.
The bulk of the funds, $38.5 million, will go towards the redevelopment of the Footscray Station precinct and creation of a new pedestrian bridge, although it was unclear until last week how some of the remaining $13.6 million would be spent.
The latest $1 million will help fund stage two of the Nicholson St mall project that is due to begin next year and should ensure a smooth transition between the completion of the first stage of works and the beginning of the second.
Cr Clarke said that while there was some expectation that State Government funding would be announced for the stage two works, it was heartening to have it confirmed.
“This really shows the government shares our vision for Footscray,” he said.
The $1 million is on top of $1.2 million already invested by the council to fund improvements to revitalise the mall.
Mr Madden said Footscray had an enviable location close to the city with a major public transport hub.
“This $52.1 million will help unlock its full social and economic potential,” he said.
Mr Madden said in recognition of Footscray’s metropolitan significance he would become the responsible authority for State Government planning decisions for the Footscray renewal project.
The redevelopment includes high-quality, low-maintenance urban designs and landscaping. The plans are to make Nicholson St and neighbouring streets more attractive to pedestrians by making it easier and safer to gain access to local services and public transport.
Cr Clarke said the plan for the mall would give the area a new sense of vibrance.
“It will be a place the community can meet and be proud of. It will be the heart of the city,” he said.
Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the announcement was fantastic news for the entire Footscray area.
“As the local businesses will appreciate, this upgrade will ensure this popular shopping mall keeps attracting lots of customers and foot traffic for generations to come,” she said.
