SUNSHINE has the fate of its round three Victorian Sub District Cricket Association match against Malvern in its own hands after the first day of play on Saturday.
The Crows will have a full day to chase Malvern’s effort of 230 runs, which came on the back of an unbeaten 88 from Nuwan Kalpage.
After two straight losses to start the season, Sunshine took the field for the first two-day fixture and generally controlled the tempo of the day with its bowling and fielding.
Impressively, five of the six Crows bowlers used got among the wickets, led by Sunny Singh, who pocketed 3/56 from 15 overs.
Opening bowler Glenn Sullivan snared 2/55, while Stuart Hensley, Shane Jones and Kevin Silber nabbed a victim each.
Malvern’s three top order batsmen each got starts but were dismissed before doing too much damage, before two cheap middle order wickets had Sunshine on top with the score at 5/122.
But the team could not remove Kalpage, who anchored the rest of the innings from the number five position to lift the visitors to a competitive total.
The Crows’ second XI was virtually hit out of its match with Malvern after spending an afternoon chasing leather, and faces a target of 411 runs this week.
