FOOTSCRAY company Urban Honey was buzzing with delight recently after getting through to the finals of The Food Challenge Awards.
The business was short-listed in two categories, Organic and Natural and Sustainable Manufacturing, alongside multinational companies such as Coles, Woolworths and Leggos.
Urban Honey produces honey from founder Lyndon Fenlon’s home and is transported by bike.
“I was surprised, because there was quite a few big names there. It was bizarre,” Mr Fenlon said.
Mr Fenlon said the experience was an eye-opener and allowed him to rub shoulders and get advice from a range of food manufacturers and producers.
Mr Fenlon started up the Urban Honey Co. six years ago to try his hand at an environmentally-friendly business.
“I was looking into food sources and I’d always been interested in bees.
“They’re small and transportable and for their size they produce much more.
“It fitted with exactly the sustainable kind of thing I wanted to do, because I could do it locally and keep it carbon-neutral.”
Last year, he helped transport 20 beehives to Braybrook’s Quang Minh Temple as the temple set up its own on-site honey production.
