A SUSTAINABILITY program that was created in Wyndham has narrowly missed out on winning a state-wide award.
As previously reported by Star, the Worm Farming Wyndham Out of Waste program was a finalist for the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria awards.
The Council-run project, now in its second year, gives Wyndham residents the opportunity to learn more sustainable waste management practices at home through worm farming.
Councillor Marcel Mahfoud said the program had a number of benefits for both residents and the community.
“Participants in the program not only helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but they also gained high quality fertilisers for their garden, and reduced the amount of waste in their garbage bin,” Cr Mahfoud said.
“Auditing showed an average decrease of 74 per cent in participants’ food waste being sent to landfill and taking part in the program allowed residents to save 50 per cent of the cost of setting up a worm farm on their own.
“While we didn’t take out the award on the night, the event also provided inspiration for staff who gained insights into a wide range of sustainability initiatives from other organisations.”
