A DOMINANT batting display lifted Werribee to a seven-wicket win over Sunshine in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association on Saturday.
For the first time this season players were greeted with perfect playing conditions at Dempster Park and it was Sunshine who made first use out in the middle.
Captain Troy Stone was the rock for the innings, making an impressive 85 while others batted around him and the score grew to 9/193 at the end of 45 overs.
In reply, the Tigers were easily able to reel in the total, reaching 3/193 in the 37th over to seal the win.
David Wolfe topped the scoring for Werribee, reaching 64 while gun recruit Tim O’Brien hit an impressive 35 not out to show he may be in for a big season.
Speaking before the match, O’Brien said he was looking forward to the season ahead with his new club.
“It’s been good. I knew a fair few people there already and that has allowed me to fit in pretty easy,” he said.
“Coming from Premier Cricket, I still wanted to play at a pretty high standard and Sub District Cricket is certainly a pretty high standard. A lot of the young kids I actually used to coach as well a couple of years ago so that really attracted me to the club.”
O’Brien will take on the vice captaincy role with Werribee under Shaun Dean. The pair had previously played a number of years of junior representative cricket together in the West.
“I have taken on a bit of a leadership role as well and am looking forward to doing a bit of coaching with the young blokes and that,” O’Brien said.
“It would be great to work with them and help them progress their careers as well.
“Definitely finals are the goal. With the group of blokes we have got and a few of the recruits we have brought it there is no reason why the ultimate goal can’t be to get into the finals and see how we go from there.”
This week Werribee will meet Melton while Sunshine will look to get its first win of the year over Kingston Saints.
