WYNDHAM residents have been urged to think about the appearance of their municipality before having a garage sale.
Wyndham Council has reminded residents that once their money-making sale is over it is their responsibility to remove any signage.
The council is starting a new initiative to get residents to remove the unwanted signs by sending letters to anyone who advertises their sale in the local paper, patrolling main roads and issuing notices to residents as well as issuing infringement notices in some cases.
Councillor Marcel Mahfoud said garage sale signs left around the municipality detracted from its appearance.
“While garage sales are a great way to do some spring cleaning while making a little bit of money, residents also have some responsibilities when it comes to post sale clean up,” Cr Mahfoud said.
“Garage sale signs left up around the municipality for days, or even weeks, give the City an unkempt appearance. When left up for too long they may also become dislodged, creating litter on our streets. I would also like to remind residents that signage is not to be placed over traffic control signage or anywhere it could present a safety risk.”
Cr Mahfoud said some residents could find themselves blowing the profit from their garage sale if they receive a fine.
“Wyndham City’s Legislative Services Officers will soon begin reminding residents of their responsibilities through a number of channels, including contacting them by phone, letter and visiting garage sales,” he said.
“Where prior warning has been issued, residents may receive an infringement notice for not removing their signage following a garage sale.”
