WYNDHAM residents are being encouraged to get their hands dirty and take part in an award winning program.
Worm Farming Wyndham out of Waste provides residents the opportunity to learn about more sustainable waste management practices at home through worm farming.
For a fee, participants receive everything they need to set up their own worm farm at home, including enrolment in a one hour course to teach them how to get started.
Councillor John Menegazzo, who has taken part in the program with his family, said there were many benefits.
“Aside from providing a high quality fertiliser for your garden, having a worm farm can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the amount of waste in your garbage bin,” Cr Menegazzo said.
“By taking part in the Wyndham program, participants can save over 50 per cent of the cost of setting up a worm farm.”
The program has been very successful with residents and has even won several environmental awards.
“The program proved very successful last year with 250 households taking part in its first year. The program was so successful, it was a finalist in the Towards Zero Waste category of the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Awards last year,” Cr Menegazzo said.
“It’s also a great way to get children involved in the garden and learning about the environment.”
