Hoon fails to learn his lesson

A 26-YEAR-OLD Delahey man must have felt a little foolish after he was caught twice in one week performing burnouts around Brimbank – both times next to unmarked police cars.
The amusing anecdote comes after Victoria Police last week released figures showing 441 vehicles had been impounded for speeding and “hoon” offences since new legislation came into effect on 1 July this year.
Assistant Commissioner (Traffic) Noel Ashby said close to 99 per cent of offenders caught were males, who he said were more likely to take dangerous risks on the road.
Earlier this year the State Government introduced harsher penalties for people caught driving unsafely or recklessly, giving authorities new powers to impound cars.
In the four months to 23 October, police impounded 124 vehicles for burnout offences, 59 for performing fishtails and 38 for performing wheelies.
Of the 441 vehicles impounded, 399 were cars, 41were motorcycles and one was a ute.
