Recent letter drops to 360 Westwood Dr residents from a developer in Burnside proposed a name change for the suburb from Burnside to Burnside Heights.
Recipients of the letter said they were confused, as they had been under the impression they were living in Caroline Springs, not Burnside.
Areas west of Westwood Dr and north of Kororoit Creek to Taylors Rd have been considered part of Caroline Springs since a name change from Burnside in 1999.
At the last Melton Shire Council meeting, residents were advised of the council’s intention to change the name of the particular area from Burnside to Caroline Springs.
Residents were given the opportunity to oppose the change until the next meeting on 26 September.
Sugar Ward councillor Justin Mammarella said an area of land that should have been included as Caroline Springs was left out when Caroline Springs was created.
State Government records showed the area as Burnside, Cr Mammarella said.
“We are taking action to correct an anomaly that residents in the area have voiced concern over,” Cr Mammarella said.
Melton Shire Council administration manager Peter Bean said a Burnside developer requested a suburb name change because “they felt there was some confusion” from residents living in the suburb of Burnside north of Kororoit Creek.
“At the moment the council’s proposal is to realign the State Government boundary to the perceived boundary, which is Westwood Dr, to be recognised as Caroline Springs,” Mr Bean said.
Cr Mammarella said the council and Caroline Springs’ developer Delfin thought Westwood Dr was always part of Caroline Springs.
