AN enthusiastic rookie from Maribyrnong Secondary College joined the Footscray police as part of a work experience placement last week.
Mikrima Mohammed, 17, shadowed Craig Spicer, community liaison officer for the Maribyrnong area, to develop an understanding of the challenges and some of the highlights experienced by police officers.
Ms Mohammed said she intends to become a police officer because she believes it is a profession that directly contributes to the wellbeing of the community.
She has a particular interest in helping the migrant community.
“If someone does not understand the police, I would be able to help,” Ms Mohammed said.
“I speak Oromo (an Ethiopian language).
“I can help my people who are new to the community understand the police”.
The teenager is also an immigrant and understands the difficulties that a language barrier can pose.
Leading Senior Constable Spicer said he was impressed by Ms Mohammed.
“She has only been in the country for two years but she definitely has her goals in life set,” he said.
“She would make a good police woman or possibly a good community leader.”
