THE Yarraville Community Centre could benefit from the Municipal Association of Victoria’s call for all political parties to commit to a national fund to restore aging infrastructure.
The four-year, $1 billion Local Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund would support the restoration of community assets such as the Yarraville centre.
The association has joined the local government push to establish a community infrastructure fund to help meet the funding gap experienced by the City of Maribyrnong and municipalities throughout the country. It is part of a new 10-point plan to reinvigorate communities.
The association president, Dick Gross, said with Victoria’s $300 million annual gap in funding for community assets, maintenance and renewal of sports grounds and facilities, town halls and community centres was beyond the capacity of councils.
“The challenge of keeping $39 billion of aging council-owned facilities at acceptable standards had intensified the strain on council budgets and the costs should be shared by all levels of government,” he said.
