FOOTSCRAY City College students will be using their social networking skills for the next month to spread the word about a little boy in need.
The year nine students have joined forces with the I Give a Buck Foundation to help five-year-old Joshua Posumah, who suffers from a range of conditions including cerebal palsy, an intellectual disability and seizures.
Joshua needs round-the-clock care and uses a wheelchair to get around. He can say a few words, but communicates mainly through a book.
This year, Joshua started going to Belmore School, a school for kids with disabilities.
He is also doing one day a week at Charles La Trobe College in Macleod West to improve his interaction with other children.
There’s one hitch: in order to sit at a regular school table with his new school friends, he needs a special chair that costs over $1100.
The Footscray City College students will be getting online for the next four weeks to encourage everyone they know to donate anything – even just a buck – to buy the chair and an iPad to aid his communication.
“We are so excited and humbled by the commitment being shown by this group of students,” Liat Harrower from the I Give a Buck Foundation said.
“Too often we hear about the perils of kids and social networking, but here we have a great example of the amazing things they’ve thought to use it for.
“It’s such a good fit – kids are at ease with the technology and know the power of social networking.”
