WERRIBEE City claimed second spot in Football Federation Victoria’s State League One competition after managing to overcome Sunshine George Cross 1-0 at Galvin Park on Saturday.
With Heidelberg United already locked in as the champion for the 2013 season, the Bees and Georgies battled it out for second in what proved to be a tight and tense affair.
Both clubs went into the final round of the season equal on 39 points with the opportunity of potentially gaining promotion into the Victorian Premier League, and after the 90 minutes it was the young Bees who prevailed.
Meanwhile down the highway at Paisley Park, Altona Magic scored an entertaining 3-2 win over Western Suburbs to finish its State League One campaign sixth on the table with 33 points.
For Suburbs the result marked a disappointing end to what will be considered a lacklustre season. The Sunshine West-based club looked a title contender early in the season but fell away dramatically the longer the season went, losing all of its last five matches.
The St Albans Saints’ 2013 campaign didn’t end any better on Saturday, either, after the Eastern Lions handed the once proud VPL club a 1-0 loss at Gardiner’s Creek Reserve.
The Saints ended up comfortably avoiding relegation to finish eighth on the table with 26 points, six ahead of the 11th-placed Lions and 12 better than cellar-dweller, Fawkner.
Meanwhile in the final round of the State League Five West division, Point Cook finished its season on a high with a 2-0 win over the Brimbank Stallions to finish second on the table behind competition benchmark, Melton Phoenix.
