A LAVERTON man has been arrested for trafficking heroin as part of a major police operation.
Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested 40 people as part of a five-week covert operation targeting drug trafficking in the Footscray CBD.
Operation Submerses kicked off on 5 August and saw plain-clothes detectives and uniform police patrolling the streets of Footscray.
In total, more than 100 charges were laid – 60 trafficking heroin charges and 20 charges for possessing drugs including heroin, amphetamine, cannabis and prescription drugs.
A 32-year-old Laverton was one of the men caught in the raids.
Maribyrnong CIU Detective Senior Constable Brendan O’Mahoney said a high percentage of people arrested during the operation resided outside of the City of Maribyrnong.
“Police will continue to work hard to reduce illicit drug use and trafficking in our community by reducing the supply and demand of the drugs and the harm caused by their use. This in turn will create a safer community,” Det Sen Const O’Mohoney said.
