WYNDHAM Council has successfully prosecuted seven people through the Magistrates Court for five cases of illegal dumping.
Three of the people were fined for dumping in front of the Salvation Army charity shops in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee, three people were prosecuted for dumped rubbish and one for pouring engine oil down a stormwater drain.
The Salvation Army estimate the cost of cleaning up illegally dumped and unuseable items in front of their stores was in excess of $1.5 million in 2012/2013.
Councillor Peter Maynard said the council supported the Salvation Army by removing any items left after hours and by prosecuting illegal dumpers.
“Unfortunately it’s rare that any items left after hours are of value, and these donations are often rummaged through, removed or weather damaged by the time volunteers arrive back at the store in the morning,” Cr Maynard said.
“Three people face a six month good behaviour bond and costs of $554.25 or $571.90 for dumping a TV box and computer in front of Salvation Army stores.”
The person who poured engine oil down a stormwater drain at Felix Way, Tarneit on 25th June 2013 has been given a six month good behaviour bond and will pay $877.35 in costs.
