THE third annual Maltese Cook Off finished up last week crowning ‘The Maltesers’ as the winners.
The competition comprised teams of three which were made up of Maltese descendants, some teams incorporating several generations, cooking traditional dishes for the judging panel.
Nisga, a group of Australian-Maltese descendants, put together the event every year in an attempt to nurture the Maltese culture in Australia.
Nisga president Sandra Mooney said it was the perfect event.
“All the guests really had a great time,” Ms Mooney said.
“The cooks worked really hard and the quality of the food was of restaurant standard,” she said.
“It was a perfect day all round.”
A panel of four judges chose the top three teams out of the 10 competing teams.
The winning dish was a combination of stuffed egg plants and rice pudding with vanilla.
The popular event sold out in a record two days.
Guests from all backgrounds enjoyed the day of Maltese food and entertainment.
“It’s great to see from eight years old to 80 years-old all having a fun time together and passing on our heritage which is what Nisga is all about,” Ms Mooney said.
Preparations are already underway for next year’s event which is set to sell out just as fast.
An Easter event called Figolli Sunday will also be held next year.
