A KEEN-EYED resident helped Wyndham City Council catch some illegal rubbish dumpers, who were recently fined thousands of dollars for leaving their waste in Point Cook.
Mayor John Menegazzo said the council successfully took three cases of illegal dumping in court this month.
Cr Menegazzo said during two of the incidents, a resident took photos of the litterers, which captured their vehicles, licence plates and the company names on their trucks.
In one of the cases, an earthworks company and its director were charged with illegally dumping 14 truckloads of dirt, after being caught in the act by a council officer.
The company was given a $5000 fine and the director was issued with a $1500 fine.
In another illegal dumping case, two men pleaded guilty to illegally dumping timber on private property.
The duo, from Taylors Lake and Point Cook, were fined $3000 each and ordered to pay the council’s legal costs.
In the third instance, a development business and its director were charged with illegally dumping dirt, rocks, foam and timber on a private property.
After the director pleaded guilty, he and the company were ordered to pay $1500 each in fines and to remove the rubble within 14 days or face further penalties.
Cr Menegazzo warned people or businesses considering illegal dumping to re-think their actions.
“While it’s incredibly disappointing that people continue to illegally dump material in Wyndham, it’s pleasing to see the court impose fines on those caught,” he said.
“Wyndham City takes littering very seriously and whether people throw a cigarette butt out a car window, or dump a load of rubbish on a vacant lot, every piece of litter is damaging to our flora and fauna.”
He urged anyone who saw illegal dumping to contact the council on 9742 0777.
