Help clean up your local area

RESIDENTS in the City of Maribyrnong are urged to take part in Clean Up Australia Day on 4 March.
Mayor Michael Clarke said the day was primarily about making the city cleaner but it was also a time to reflect on broader environmental issues.
“In this spirit, everyone in the community is invited to attend a church service at the Paisley St Baptist Church, which will focus on environmental issues,” he said.
Four church groups, two from the Vietnamese community, the Friends of Stony Creek, Friends of Maribyrnong Valley groups, the council’s Clean and Green group and Environment Victoria representatives will take part in the clean up.
Cr Clarke said that last year 200 volunteers helped clean up and he hoped more people would participate this year.
The clean-up includes Little Saigon in Footscray, Cranwell Park in Braybrook, Hyde St Reserve in Yarraville, Chifley Drive in Maribyrnong, Saltwater Crossing in Footscray and Cruickshank Park in Yarraville.
A barbecue will be held at Cruickshank Park, where volunteers can meet the mayor, and a barbecue in addition to activities for children will be held in Paisley St, Footscray.
Volunteers will be given safety and clean-up equipment but are asked to wear protective shoes and suitable clothing.
