SUNSHINE residents are concerned over plans to build a three-tower development on Hampshire Rd, a local residents’ group said last week.
More than 100 objections were collected at a public meeting organised by the Sunshine Residents and Ratepayers Association.
The planned $70 million development includes two seven to nine-storey towers and one tower six to eight storeys high.
The developers propose that from base to the highest point the three towers will stand 47, 33 and 30 metres respectively.
The buildings would house shops, offices and 144 independent units for the over-55s, they say.
SunRRA president Darlene Reilly said Sunshine residents, workers, shoppers, traders and ratepayers did not want the development.
“I believe our concerns have been validated. It was amazing but not too surprising how many people we talked to who were not even aware of the proposed development and were shocked when they were told the proposed heights and usage of the buildings,” Ms Reilly said.
SunRRA said residents were concerned about adding more retail space to Sunshine and preferred open space and a community centre on the site, she said.
The group also claimed certain types of businesses would be restricted from the site to avoid competition with existing shopping centres.
A spokesperson for the three towers development refused to comment on the SunRRA’s claims but said the proposal was “good for Sunshine”.
SunRRA also revealed last week it had written to Planning Minister Rob Hulls, criticising the project.
The group has called on the State Government to step in and monitor the planning process.
