PRIMARY school students are being urged to get involved in the Walktober Walk to School day next Wednesday.
Walktober Walk to School is an initiative of VicHealth to encourage children to walk as part of their daily routine. The aim is to get as many primary students as possible to walk to school on 24 October.
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said it was important to encourage young children to walk as much as possible as it was important physical activity that promoted health and fitness.
“Last year Sunshine Heights Primary School had 72.7 per cent of students walk to school on Walk to School day. This is a fantastic effort and one we hope to see many schools strive to match on the day,” Cr Giudice said.
“This year, the council is offering an incentive to schools already involved in the Walking School Bus and Walking Wednesdays programs to take part in the Walk to School event.
“The school with the highest percentage of children walking to school on the day will receive a trophy and a $200 voucher for sporting equipment.
“As an added incentive, any of the schools that participated last year that have an increase of 10 per cent of children walking this year will receive a $100 sporting equipment voucher.”
