ALTONA Magic and Werribee City ended their 2012 State League Division One campaigns in stunning fashion on Saturday with an entertaining 6-3 win to the Magic.
The match may have been a dead rubber with promotion and relegation already decided, but third place was up for grabs at Paisley Park for the winner.
Altona went into halftime up 2-1 and turned it on in the second half, adding another four goals to Werribee City’s two to secure the win over its western rival.
In other results on the final day, Western Suburbs finished its season 7th on the table after going down 4-1 to the Whittlesea Ranges at Ralph Reserve.
Down 2-1 at halftime, Western Suburbs couldn’t turn their fortunes around in the second half and ended the season with 30 points and nine wins.
Sunshine George Cross produced one of the best results of the round with a 1-1 draw away to the Port Melbourne Sharks, who along with Pascoe Vale, will be joining the Victorian Premier League next season.
The Sharks had little chance of winning the competition and needed other results to go their way, but the Georgies ensured no such miracle would occur.
Down by a goal at halftime, the Georgies left their eventual equaliser to the death, finally scoring in the 87th minute off the boot of Stefan Baricevic, who capitalised on a Sharks error inside the box.
The win ensured Sunshine finished above its local rival St Albans in eighth spot.
The Saints had a day they would rather forget, going down 6-2 to FC Bulleen at David Barro Stadium after conceding three goals in each half.
The Saints ended up ninth and avoided relegation.
Dandenong City and the Springvale White Eagles were the two clubs to get relegated.
