BUILDING company Elite Homes were celebrating over the weekend after taking out the Best Renovation award at the Master Builders Association Excellence in Housing Awards.
The company was awarded for the best renovation/addition costing between $200,000 and $300,000 for a two-storey property in Yarraville.
Retaining the heritage overlay to keep the existing roof pitch and length, the carefully calculated renovation included a new practical living space, two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.
The new cabinetry in the kitchen was constructed with recycled material, and granite bench tops were installed in the kitchen and bathroom vanities.
Original solid Jarrah verandah posts were restored and black- butt floors were used in the new extension.
The builders also focused on providing lots of natural light through louvered windows to the upper storey and velux sky windows.
Judge Geoff Woolcock commended Elite Homes on the tricky renovation.
“This was a major renovation and extension with the difficulties associated with building in a heritage area,” Mr Woolcock said.
“The builders are to be commended for their hands on execution of the project – they did much of the work themselves.
“It is a clever extension, utilising the roof-space and character of the building and the area and reusing many of the existing materials where possible. Everything was done with a passion which is displayed in the finished result.”
Concept Design and Construction took out the Master Builder of the Year award on the night, with the celebration taking place at the Crown Palladium.
