A WYNDHAM grandfather was killed when he fell from 10 storeys at a building site in the Melbourne CBD last week.
Bill Ramsay, 59, fell from scaffolding at a Grocon construction site where he was working as a crane driver just before 7.40am on Monday 18 February.
A spokesperson for the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) said Mr Ramsay would be missed.
“The CFMEU is shocked and deeply saddened by the death this morning of longtime member Bill Ramsay, 59, on Grocon’s Emporium site in the Melbourne CBD,” the spokesperson said.
“Bill was well known and liked around the construction industry and was a committed unionist. He was part of a large working class family with strong links to the union movement.”
Investigations into Mr Ramsay’s death are still being carried out and the CFMEU took the opportunity to promote workplace safety.
“Bill’s passing is a reminder of the risks that construction workers face on a daily basis and why safety is the CFMEU’s number one priority,” the spokesperson said.
“Bill will be missed by all who worked alongside him and his comrades in the CFMEU.”
A spokesperson from the Plumbing Trades Employees Union also expressed their sadness over Mr Ramsay’s death.
“Mr Ramsay was valued and respected within the union movement and construction industry, a long-serving member of the CFMEU and an experienced crane driver,” the spokesperson said.
“The Ramsay family has strong links to the union movement, and Mr Ramsay’s son Bill (jnr) has recently taken an organiser role with the PTEU.
“The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident are still unknown, WorkSafe investigation is ongoing.”
Mr Ramsay’s grandson also plays senior football for the Hoppers Crossing Football Club.
