GOOD News Lutheran School in Tarneit lived up to its name last week, when it said it would offer secondary schooling in 2007.
Acting Principal Ann-Marie Weigl said the move stemmed from parent frustration at a lack of Christian secondary schools in the area.
“Parents struggle to find Christian schools in Werribee. We’ve often had children going as far as Melton to continue their Christian education,” she said.
The school recently held a public information session to evaluate the need for expansion into year seven.
“The session was well attended,” Ms Weigl said.
“We just have to see now if there is enough interest in enrolments to go ahead with the plan.”
Accommodating a year seven level will involve building new rooms at the school.
“We will have new facilities to house a science area and some other speciality rooms,” Ms Weigl said.
Stage one plans for four new classrooms have already been approved and will be built this year regardless of a new year-level.
Ms Weigl said students were excited at the prospect of staying at the school for their teenage years.
“Some parents have had to home school their kids due to the lack of Christian centres around,” she said.
The Good News Lutheran School system follows that of America where year levels are split into middle years of prep to grade four, grade five to year nine and then a senior school of years 10 to 12.
They plan to extend year levels to year 12 by annual steps.
Expressions of interest are now being taken from those who might like to enrol in year seven next year.
