A moving experience

THE SENSATION West Footscray actor Alec Gilbert gets from being on stage is exhilarating. In between juggling paid acting work, developing a TV series for Channel 31 and spending time with his wife, the passionate actor enjoys nothing more than performing to an audience.
But it was last December upon auditioning for the war theatre production ‘Not About Heroes’ when he realised his passion for theatre.
“That audition did get the theatre juices flowing again,” he said. “I do really love it, but it takes a lot of time and commitment. I think it’s the immediate contact you get with the audience and the power you have in taking control of their emotions.”
Starting this Thursday night, the locally adapted theatre production explores the emotional journey of poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen during World War I and how their friendship grows beyond the trenches.
Directed by Shane Ryan and starring Andrew Mayes, Alec hopes the play works as a timely reminder to help commemorate Australian and New Zealand soldiers for Anzac Day. Not About Heroes will run at the Williamstown Little Theatre between the 28 April to 15 May 2011.
