WYNDHAM students will have a chance to play next to some of the state’s finest classical musicians next month when Orchestra Victoria rolls into town.
Over two days children from schools across Wyndham will be involved in a workshop with the professionals to develop their skills.
Four students from the string section will then be chosen to spend one more day practising as a string quartet.
John Noble from Orchestra Victoria has been with the program since its inception nine years ago.
Mr Noble said the students would learn much more than just classical music skills.
“We’re going to have 40 or 50 high school students who have never played together in an ensemble before,” Mr Noble said.
“Over the two days they learn how to practice together as an orchestra. The difference in their performance from the beginning to the end of the two days is just phenomenal.”
Mr Noble said the students would become more rounded individuals in the short time they spend with orchestra.
“We’re teaching them teamwork, cooperation and leadership through music,” he said.
“People might think that we just playing music for a few days, but they are learning so much more.”
At the end of the workshop the students will present a performance with Orchestra Victoria on 4 August at the Wyndham Cultural Centre.
