SISTER Agnes Lyng’s legacy has been cast in stone at Marian College with the school’s new Year 7 and 8 learning areas dedicated to her.
Around 150 current and former staff, students, parents and school councillors attended the opening of the new buildings, with many fond and funny memories of Sister Agnes shared among the crowd.
Sister Agnes, an Irish nun, was an institution at Marian College and her passion for the school and the Brigidine teachings remained strong until her passing in January 2001, after a difficult illness.
Sister Bridget Arthur, a former principal at Marian College, said the naming of the new buildings after Sister Agnes, was very appropriate.
“I think of Sister Agnes as a heart that is passionate and a commitment that is compassionate,” Sr Bridget said.
“Most of her life she taught Year 7 and Year 8, so it is appropriate that these buildings will be used by our Year 7 and 8s.
“She loved young people, she loved teachers and was always engaged in a lot of fun.”
The new building is part of a $2.09 million in improvements to the school grounds and buildings, assisted by $1.4 million in funding from the Federal Government’s Capital Grants program.
