A FAMILY of six were saved by smoke alarms when their house was engulfed in flames in the early hours of of Saturday morning.
Fire crews from Laverton and Sunshine attended the Roberts St residence after occupants called them about 1.20am.
A working smoke alarm woke the four children asleep in the house, who in turn alerted the two older women.
It is believed that clothes or blankets left too close to a fire started the blaze, shortly after midnight. Sunshine MFB Station Officer, Geoff Audsley, said incidents like this won the argument for working smoke detectors.
“Time and time again working smoke detectors are proven lifesavers,” he said.
