Young Idol contest

By Kristy McDonald
THERE is no Marcia, Dicko or Kyle and no national broadcast, but Brimbank Idol is back and locals are being called on to sign up for the talent quest.
Talented young singers aged between 12 and 24 years on 19 October 2008 could enter the competition for a chance to be this year’s Idol.
The deadline for applications is Friday 12 September 2008.
The competition will be one of the attractions at the 2008 Brimbank Festival, offering young people who live, work or study in Brimbank the opportunity to show off their vocal talents and all entrants will receive the opportunity to audition for a place in the finals.
Last year’s Brimbank Idol, Sarah De Bono, said her win in the competition had given her some wonderful opportunities to do what she likes to do best – perform.
Sarah has just finished three days of performances as ‘Sandy’ in her school’s production of the classic musical, Grease and is looking forward to being the guest performer at this year’s Idol.
“This has been such a good experience for me,” Sarah said.
“Brimbank Council has given me so many opportunities to perform within the council area – I’ve been to naturalisation ceremonies, Harmony Day events, it’s been really great.”
And does she have any advice for this year’s potential idols?
“Just go in there and be yourself, really enjoy it, it’s really a lot of fun,” she said.
Brimbank mayor Sam David said the Brimbank Idol competition was a great opportunity for young people to have their musical talent recognised by the community.
“The competition was a great success in 2006 and 2007 and showcased the rich musical talent of the young people in Brimbank. If you didn’t enter before, I’d encourage you to give it a go this year,” Cr David said.
The Brimbank Idol finals will be staged on Sunday 19 October from 11.15am to 12.30pm at Errington Community Centre, St Albans as part of the 2008 Brimbank Festival.
In addition to performing on the main Brimbank Festival stage on 19 October 2008, the Idol winner will be called upon to perform at a range of civic events during the year, gaining valuable performance experience and a greater profile.
Download the entry form at www.brimbank.vic.gov.au or contact the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre on 9361 6600.
Entries close 5pm, Friday 12 September 2008 and must be posted or hand delivered to the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, 775 Ballarat Road, Deer Park VIC 3023.
Auditions will be held 4.30pm to 7pm on Thursday 2 October at Errington Community Centre, 1 Princess St, St Albans.
