In the mood for photography

Samantha Moody's self portrait. 110694 Picture: SAMANTHA MOODY

FOR Werribee’s Samantha Moody, making herself float and defy gravity is just another ordinary day.
The 21-year-old photographer recently completed her Advanced Diploma of Photography at Photography Studies College (PSC) in Melbourne.
Along with 18 of her fellow students, a collection of her works is currently on display at a graduation exhibition.
Samantha chose to enter only self-portraits into the exhibition and she said she hoped that people would be able to see a story in her photos.
One of the photos, entitled Weightless, shows Samantha seemingly floating while her long white dress and blonde hair hang down to towards the ground.
She said the photo took her roughly three hours to complete, with one and a half hours set aside just for taking the actual photos and the rest of the time used for pre and post production.
Samantha said she first became interested in photography when she picked up her mother’s simple digital camera when she was in Year Nine at school.
“I just used to borrow my mum’s camera and take photos of my friends at school and eventually everybody knew me as the photography girl,” Samantha said.
“I just really enjoyed it and eventually it became my voice.”
At such a young age, Samantha already has her eyes set firmly on her goal of becoming a professional photographer, and earlier this year she set up her own company, Samantha Moody Photography.
“My photography has completely changed since I first took the camera to school,” she said.
“I don’t even know how to explain it.
“At first it was just for fun and now it is still fun but it’s also a career choice. I get so excited when I know another shoot is coming up.”
The exhibition, Fresh 13, will be held at Yarra Sculpture Gallery in Abbotsford until 8 December.
