THE campaign to save the Yarraville Community Centre will be transformed into a community celebration next month.
Residents have been invited to celebrate the commitments made by all levels of government during next month’s So Far, So Good festival.
The biggest party held on the Francis St site will be on Sunday 9 December to celebrate the future role of the much-loved community resource.
Centre manager Christine McCall said the event was a chance for the community to get together and celebrate the progress made so far in securing a sustainable future for the centre.
“It’s going to be great fun, with a range of entertainment for both adults and kids and will include an opportunity for people to find out what progress is being made and what the future holds,” she said.
While more money is needed to restore the building, the centre’s working group is moving towards implementing an action plan to save the centre and ensure its community use well into the future.
Ms McCall said tours of the historic building would detail the architectural features and what is planned for its restoration while an outside cafe and market area would help to create a festive vibe.
High profile comedians and musicians have offered their skills to accompany ballet dancers, the West Papuan Dance Troupe, the centre’s multicultural choir and the Dave Jones Jazz Band who will provide entertainment throughout the day.
Ms McCall said the value the community had placed the centre had been reflected in the efforts to save the historic building.
“We’d like to see everyone who has an interest in the YCC turn out to support this day and it’s going to be a great day’s free entertainment,” she said.
