THE Western Region Football League’s newest identity, Newport Power Junior Football Club, has kicked its first goal without a ball being bounced in the 2006 season.
The club, set to embark on its first season in the league, has joined forces with Australian Football League club Port Adelaide, with which it will be affiliated this year.
Newport’s juniors will wear a replica Port Power strip on match days and are hoping to give something back by being involved in functions and clinics whenever the club is in town.
Newport Juniors president Peter Young is excited about the challenges that lay ahead for the club, which will operate separately to the senior entity.
The club was formed after a rapid rise in numbers at the Newport Auskick clinic, which has grown from 80 members two years ago to more than 150.
Auskick will continue to act as a feeder organisation to the new club, giving Newport a stable base from which to recruit.
The club will start with two teams in its opening year, in under nines and 11s, with provision to grow as more families move into the area.
“It’s pretty exciting. We’re getting a lot of new families moving down here,” Young said.
“If we get them on the field playing footy it will be great.”
The club is looking for potential junior coaches and helpers for the 2006 season, with a registration day planned for late February.
Newport Juniors will play home games at Bryan Martin Oval, Market Street, Newport.
