Safer crossing for streets

CROSSING the intersection of Barkly and Hopkins streets in Footscray will be safer following the completion of a new pedestrian-friendly crossing area.
As part of the $4.5 million Nicholson St Mall redevelopment, the intersection will be updated with a crossing and additional footpath for the 13,500-plus pedestrians who use the area each day.
When it is finished, pedestrians will have the option to move diagonally across the intersection over a large rectangular area, similar to the intersection of Flinders and Elizabeth streets in the centre of Melbourne.
Pedestrian counts of key areas around the mall have also been carried out and will be compared with pedestrian flow counts following the completion of the work.
