FINALS contender Williamstown proved too strong for Sunshine in their round 12 Victorian Sub District Cricket Association (VSDCA) match at Dempster Park on Saturday.
Williamstown’s first day total of 268 never looked like being challenged by the underachieving home side.
Sunshine was bowled for only 90 in the first innings as all-rounder Craig Sheedy (3/16) mesmerised the home side’s batsmen, while Rohan Smith (3/23) was also dominant with the ball.
Sunshine had progressed to 4/61 in its second dig before play ended on day two.
Malvern, meanwhile, claimed maximum points against a lacklustre Broadmeadows at Sewell Reserve.
Resuming at 5/92 in response to Broadmeadows’ paltry first innings total of 89, the visitors compiled another valuable 49 runs before being bowled out for 141.
Impressive Broadmeadows youngster Mitchell Streiff (4/48) finished as his side’s leading wicket-taker.
Streiff’s team-mates Steve Goodwin (3/42) Eric Ruska (3/45) were also excellent performers and saved Broadmeadows from further embarrassment.
Malvern dismissed Broadmeadows for 67 in its second innings, bowler Monto Perera (5/18) going on a bowling rampage and compounding the home side’s woes with the bat.
Sapal (26) was the best contributor with the bat.
In reply, Malvern (1/16) notched up the outright win with the loss of one wicket.
At Chirnside Park, despite resuming at 2/14 on day two Werribee scored 236 and won its clash against Brighton, which made 175.
Patrick Eckel led the home side with a brilliant innings of 72, while Damien Abbey (42), and teenage sensation Travis Dean (42) made positive contributions.
Brighton’s Calum Cook (3/86) was his team’s most successful bowler.
In other games, Altona bowler Matthew Boglis (4/14 off 13 overs) helped his team record an impressive victory over Kingston Saints at Walter Galt Reserve.
In reply to Altona’s first day total of 160, the Saints were bowled for 116 off 61.3 overs.
Kingston batsman Adrian Jones top-scored and battled his way to 29, while Christopher O’Meara (21) was his side’s next best.
Ladder leader Caulfield’s modest first day total of 190 was enough to ensure victory over Yarraville, which made 122.
Yarraville’s Ijaz Ahmad top-scored with an unbeaten 32, while Josh Helman (3/10 off six overs) was Caulfield’s leading wicket-taker.
Melton made 5/134 to defeat Elsternwick (133) in a one-day match at MacPherson Park after the first day’s play was abandoned.
And Moorabbin was all out for 149 at E.E. Gunn Reserve in reply to Ormond’s first day total of 9/191, as Chris Hooker (6/39 off 28 overs) virtually destroyed the opposition with brilliant spell of bowling.
In the final round of the VSDCA season, Williamstown plays Melton, Yarraville faces Sunshine, Altona plays Caulfield, Werribee is away to Malvern, Brighton hosts Kingston Saints, Elsternwick plays Ormond, and Moorabbin plays Broadmeadows in one-day fixtures.
