VICTORIAN Governor David de Kretser spent a full day in Wyndham last Thursday, visiting schools, community centres, the Werribee Mansion and the local animal hospital.
Mayor Shane Bourke said it had been an honour to tour the city with the Governor, who has been in the job since April. “He made a lot of people very happy,” Cr Bourke said.
The first stop was Werribee’s Glen Devon Primary School, one of Victoria’s most disadvantaged schools.
The principal of the 190-student school, Lloyd Campbell, said the Governor had been “blown away” by its innovative programs.
Glen Devon has developed alternative programs that encourage school engagement and attendance.
“The students were thrilled to think that such an important person was coming to see them,” Mr Campbell said.
Governor de Kretser also visited the Werribee Community Centre, where he and his wife Jan were moved close to tears when English language learners sang “I am Australian”.
The final stop was the University of Melbourne’s veterinary clinic and hospital.
The 41-year-old clinic officially unveiled several major upgrades this week. They include a new after-hours’ reception and a new equine surgery.
