YOUTH at risk of premature termination of their education will learn some new skills and gain some confidence through a mechanical project.
Hand Brake Turn (HBT), run by Concern Australia, offers five courses per year where young people at risk help fix up cars, which in turn are donated to victims of crime.
Sunshine’s HBT recently received $6000 in support from the Commonwealth Bank.
As a registered training organisation, Concern Australia provides HBT participants the opportunity to complete an automotive course and graduate with a Certificate I in Automotive.
Sunshine assistant manager Daniel Moyle said there were about 18 young people who participated in each course, which ran for eight weeks.
He said since Sunshine’s HBT started two years ago, nine cars would have been fixed up through the courses and donated to victims of crime.
HBT centres are also located in Dandenong, Geelong and central coast of New South Wales.
