WILLIAMSTOWN made it four Victorian Football League (VFL) wins on the trot with a 10-goal thumping of the Box Hill Hawks in a round eight David and Goliath battle on Saturday.
The 23.15.153 to 13.12.90 win keeps the Seagulls on top of the ladder and leaves the Hawks floundering on the bottom.
The match played at Burbank Oval saw the visitors gain the early ascendancy, kicking 3.5 in the opening term to Williamstown’s 2.4.
The seven-point lead was overtaken by the Seagulls in the second quarter on the back of a six-goal term. But it was the third quarter that proved the difference as the home side pulled away, kicking 10 majors to stretch the margin out to 44 points.
The Hawks were overwhelmed and could not reel in the surging Gulls.
Five more majors in the final term racked up Williamstown’s seventh victory for the season.
David Stretton was named best on ground for the Seagulls. Patrick Rose led the goal scoring for Williamstown with five goals, while Matt Little provided support with four.
The Werribee Tigers fought hard to put their fourth win of the year on the board in a confident 55-point win against Collingwood on Saturday.
The Tigers had a rough start on their home turf, kicking 3.7 in the opening term while Collingwood tore away to an early lead with 6.1.
The margin was reduced by a point in the second term with Werribee again struggling to find the middle of the big sticks, kicking 2.4 to Collingwood’s 2.3.
The Tigers made their mark in the third term. Strapping on their kicking boots they put eight majors on the board and limited the Pies to just one to take a 31-point lead into the final change.
Five more goals in the final term put the game beyond doubt and will give the Tigers some confidence going forward despite the early stumble.
Ben Davies was named best on ground for the Tigers, while Leigh Brown and James Podsiadly led the offensive charge kicking five each.
The big VFL/SANFL clash will be held on Saturday with a strong contingent of players from the West in line to represent the Big V.
Williamstown boasts the most players in the VFL state representative squad set to take on the SANFL at Adelaide Oval.
Six players – Scott Meyer, Brett Johnson, Jason Cloke, Dean Galea, Rose and Stretton – made the squad. Werribee’s Podsiadly was the only Tiger to make the squad.
The team coached by North Ballarat’s Gerard Fitzgerald was scheduled to be announced this week with the list unavailable before Star went to press.
The game will be televised on ABC TV at 1.10pm on Saturday.
