MOVES to expand the Watergardens town centre will take a step forward after Brimbank City Council agreed to an officer’s recommendation on Tuesday night.
The council agreed to have the State Planning Minister appoint a panel to conduct an inquiry into a proposed planning scheme amendment dealing with the proposed third stage of the Watergardens development.
Taylors Ward councillor Marilyn Zukalski said she was pleased the proposal was moving forward, particularly as Myer had expressed interest in locating to the shopping and entertainment complex.
“I believe they have actually signed up,” Cr Zukalski told the chamber on Tuesday night, before a full gallery.
A spokesperson for the centre management company QIC said Myer had recently expressed its commitment to Watergardens, although an application was yet to be lodged with authorities for the addition of a department store.
“However, the potential for a department store has always been part of the long-term master planfor the growth of Watergardens,” the spokesperson said.
“Research shows that demand for retail amenities still outstrips supply within the region.
“A department store is the next logical next step in the growth of the town centre and would enable people to shop locally instead of having to go outside the area.”
