THERE was no shortage of exciting horses and star jockeys on show at the Werribee Racing Club on Sunday for its Australia Day meeting. Punters and racegoers were greeted with an eight-race card on a day dominated by the short priced runners.
With Vlad Duric on board, 7-1 chance Red Letter Day crossed the line first in the Werribee Function Centre Two Year Old Maiden Plate to get the day off to a winning start for punters.
The favourites continued to control the track throughout the next few hours with Sweet Clementine (race two), Silk and Diamonds (race three), Silent Man (race four), Avighna (race six) and Saint or Sinner (race seven) all coming in first at short odds.
There was finally some respite for the bookies with 20-1 chance Ego’s Better claiming the seventh on the card, the Werribee Racing Club Community Clubs Handicap.
The final race saw Reel Way take out the TAB Showcase Handicap from Billy Esprit and Fire and Flood in second and third respectively.
Werribee’s next race meeting will be on Monday 3 March.
It will be a busy month for Werribee with the club also hosting its Community Race Day on 13 March and its Charity Race Day on 29 March.
