Car clampdown

THE Sheriff made a large haul in Werribee last week as 27 people had clamps placed on their car wheels.
A long line of clamped cars could be seen sitting on the side of the Princes Freeway for most of last week.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said the Sheriff’s office had worked with Victoria Police to catch people with a large number of outstanding fines on Sunday 19 February.
Twenty seven vehicles were clamped, including two luxury BMWs.
The owner of one of the vehicles was unable to meet the terms of their warrant so their car was confiscated to be sold at auction.
“The majority of fines issued in Victoria are paid promptly but a minority of the community breach court orders and do not pay their fines. Failure to pay an infringement notice can result in the issuing of an infringement warrant, enforced by the Sheriff,” the spokesperson said.
“There are a range of payment options available for people who are having difficulty paying their outstanding fines, including entering into a payment plan.”
A resident who lived near where the cars were left after being clamped told Star that the owner of one vehicle had been boasting about having more that $10,000 in unpaid fines when he came to check on his car.
The Department of Justice spokesperson said the proceeds of the auction of any confiscated vehicles was used to pay off the unpaid fines.
