A video insight into three migrant lives

By Kerri-Anne Mesner
A NEW documentary video, Women in Harmony, will be launched at The Sun Theatre in Yarraville today at 6pm.
The documentary offers a glimpse into the lives of three women living in Melbourne’s Western suburbs – Teresa Kau, of Braybrook, Nan Myat Kyaw and Mary Weaven, both from Newport.
Nan was a secondary teacher in her homeland of Karen, between the Thai and Burmese border.
She tells of the government persecution she and her family suffered.
Teresa was a primary school teacher in Sudan before she was forced to flee with her family into the bush.
She describes the horrors of life in Sudan during the civil war and her time in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya.
Dr Mary Weaven is a lecturer in Education at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus.
She tells how she adopted three children from Ethiopia.
The documentary highlights the courage and strength of the three women.
Women in Harmony was directed and produced by Sarah Tartakover, who teaches at Victoria University’s St Albans’ campus.
The video was made with funding from the Victorian Multicultural Commission’s Women Creating Harmony grant and under the auspices of Yarraville Community Centre.
