Books bind club together

By Christine de Kock
BOOK lovers have formed a club at the Yarraville Community Centre with the first meeting to take place this Thursday (10 August).
Amanda Armstrong, general adult education coordinator at the centre, said the group was formed because of strong community demand.
“There have been a lot of inquiries about forming a book club,” she said.
“There are a lot of book clubs around but they have older types of books.
“The Sun Bookshop will be providing our books, they’ll be contemporary.”
Debbie McCormack said she was new to Yarraville and saw membership of the book club as an opportunity to become part of the community.
“I lived in Sydney before I came here and I wanted to meet like-minded people in the area,” she said.
“Also, I love reading.”
Club members will read Geraldine Brooks’ Year of Wonders, which can be purchased at a discount through Sun Bookshop.
The book explores the way the plague affected a small town in London and is described as being fairly authentic to the period of 1666. Community members wanting to join the club can contact 9687 1560.
