YARRAVILLE artist Ruth Allen won the inaugural Toyota Community Spirit Artist Travel Award, worth $10,000, last week for her work ‘Jane – Synergetic Series’.
Ms Allen will use her $10,000 prize money to travel to the United States, where she plans to create new work, visit galleries and museums and share her knowledge through lectures.
Curator Ken Wong described Ms Allen’s work with glass as “leading-edge”.
“Traditionally glass art practice is object-based and literally sits on a pedestal or a piece of furniture,” he said.
“Ruth has an international vision for her work which extends the boundaries of traditional glass artists.”
Ms Allen’s sculpture, along with the other finalist artworks, will be on public display until 22 November at the Toyota Community Spirit Gallery, 155 Bertie St, Port Melbourne. Viewing hours are 1 to 6pm on Thursdays and Fridays or by appointment.
