BRIMBANK Maltese community members crowded the Maltese Ghannejjah Club in St Albans last week to meet Malta’s Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence Gonzi.
Dr Gonzi was in Brimbank as part of his visit to Australia to meet Maltese communities.
He was introduced to members of Melbourne’s biggest Maltese community by club president George Aquilina and former Brimbank mayor Charlie Apap.
Brimbank City councillor Ken Capar, who attended the gathering, said the Maltese community members later welcomed the chance to learn more about the Maltese Government’s legislation enacted on 2 August to extend the eligibility of people to obtain Maltese citizenship.
Cr Capar said second-generation Maltese Australian-born residents could now apply for Maltese citizenship.
“Most see it is a positive move towards strengthening ties between migrant families from Malta and their ancestral homes,” he said.
“It is fantastic to have Maltese Prime Minister Gonzi visiting Brimbank to meet with Maltese Australians in St Albans and Sunshine.”
Cr Capar said the Ghannejjah Club was filled to capacity, with about 300 people.
