Program for better health

WYNDHAM residents have been urged to get active in April as part of a council health initiative.
A variety of sports and activities have been planned throughout the month.
The feature event of the Active in April campaign will be a community bike ride to discover Wyndham’s bike trails on Sunday 20 April beginning at Chirnside Park.
Other activities will include tai chi, bike riding, lawn bowls and dancing.
Speaking at Iramoo Primary School’s athletics carnival, Wyndham Councillor Bob Fairclough said being inactive was a major cause of ill health in Australia.
“To improve health and wellbeing, it is recommended that adults get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days and children and teens do at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day,” Cr Fairclough said.
“The Active in April campaign provides opportunities for Wyndham residents to try something new and maybe even discover an activity that they could participate in regularly.
“Apart from the obvious benefits of losing weight and improving your health, participating in regular group activities is also a great way to make new friends.”
Iramoo Primary School recently started its own health kick, by becoming an accredited Kids Go For Your Life school.
The Kids Go For Your Life program is a state-wide initiative funded by the State Government and managed by Diabetes Australia and The Cancer Council Victoria.
The initiative aims to create healthier Victorian children who enjoy eating well and being physically active every day.
Active in April is an initiative of Wyndham City Council, in conjunction with local physical activity providers, and forms part of the Wyndham Municipal Public Health Plan 2007-2010.
