A NEW club in Point Cook is encouraging senior citizens to go out and get active.
The Le Petrel-Mauritian Seniors club was formed earlier this year to address the lack of social activities for senior residents in the area.
President of the club Lindsay Lefebure said the group aimed to help senior Wyndham residents meet new people and socialise in a friendly and relaxed environment.
“When I came here two years ago I met a few friends and I asked them if they thought I should start a senior citizens club. They said they thought it was a good idea,” Mr Lefebure said.
The Le Petrel-Mauritian Seniors club meet every Wednesday at the Featherbrook Community Centre to play games, enjoy afternoon tea and listen to music from the 1960s.
“We look after seniors of the Mauritian community but we accept anybody that wants to join us,” Mr Lefebure said.
“It’s good to get people out from in front of the TV and help get them active.”
The club was awarded a grant from the Department of Health to help locate isolated seniors in Wyndham and encourage them to socialise with other residents in the area.
Ms Lefebure said he was in the process of organising door-to-door transport services for club members living in Melbourne’s West.
“We are negotiating with community transport to see if they can help seniors who cannot catch public transport to come to the club and get back home,” he said.
“I am doing my best to try and reach them.”
