LACHLAN King is preparing to do some travelling.
After a stellar performance at the recent National Indoor Cricket Championships in Brisbane, King was selected for the Australian Under-14 side that will compete in the World Cup.
The tournament is set to be held in South Africa next month while players will also meet in Brisbane beforehand for a training camp.
“We played a carnival and they picked about 12 kids to represent the country. Before the tournament I was hoping to be selected but during the carnival we were a bit surprised,” King said.
“I can’t wait to head over. Hopefully I can just continue to improve and we can win the World Cup. That would be great.”
King’s achievements on the sporting field have been recognised with a nomination in the Don Deeble Rising Sports Star Award.
The Award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Michael will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist him in his future sporting goals.
The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the Western Suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.
Playing out of the Werribee Indoor Sports Centre, King has a number of more than handy training partners.
At the National Indoor Championships, 11 of the players who represented Victoria across the under 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s age groups play their junior cricket at Werribee.
Lachlan’s father Shane said it was great to see the outstanding results of all the boys who played in the National Championships.
“We knew that the boys were quite talented down there so we were expecting a few to make the national team and it was good that a couple of them did. There were a couple who were very unlucky to miss out to be honest,” Shane said.
“They are all a really talented group and they have trained hard to get to where they are.”
Werribee has also had success at club level with their Werribee Super League side making it to the semi-finals this season before being knocked out of the competition.
With a number of Werribee’s players as young as 14 and playing in an open age competition, the future is also looking strong.
“I think because they are used to playing a fairly high standard they use that when they come up against the juniors. They are used to playing at that level,” Shane said.
“In the last few years the boys have just kept stepping up and getting better and better with all the experiences they have had.
“Quite a few of the boys have played in carnivals and some of them even three or four times for Victoria now. Each year they just keep getting better .”
