ONE Werribee father has been recognised for his tireless efforts at home and in the community.
Chris Drummond, a father to three boys, Declan, Liam and Rory, was nominated by his two oldest sons for the YMCA Community Father of the Year award.
The award recognises dads or father figures who are doing their best for kids in the community.
Mr Drummond, who coaches his kid’s basketball and football teams while studying to become a teacher and working night shift at a supermarket, said he was shocked to be presented with the award.
“When they nominated me it was sort of more light hearted than anything but then when they rang me up and said that I had won I freaked out,” Mr Drummond said.
“I never expected to win.”
Mr Drummond said he was not the only father doing his bit for the community.
“There’s so many other guys here that put in a lot of time so to be singled out is pretty special,” he said.
Mr Drummond decided to study to become a teacher after he was made redundant at his job as an engine assembler.
“I thought to myself ‘what’s something that I can do’ and coaching was making me happy so I decided to become a teacher,” he said.
“The experience of coaching was really positive so that sort of tripped the fuse.”
Eight-year-old Liam said he nominated his dad because of how nice he is.
“He’s super, super, super nice and he always helps people,” Liam said.
