CHAMPION cheerleader Steph-anie Davey can fly through the air and do flips, which make people gasp in wonder.
The 25-year-old, who won this year’s Canadian National Championships with her squad, has started cheerleading lessons at the Hoppers Crossing Gymnastics Club.
Her Southern Cross All Star Cheerleading will begin an ‘Introduction to Cheerleading’ course on 10 October.
‘My goal is to start a cheerleading school in the West,’ Ms Davey said.
The Canadian-born Point Cook resident met her Australian husband while backpacking four years ago and has also introduced him to the sport.
‘He’s 32 and he’s learning back flips,’ she said.
Ms Davey began ‘collegiate style cheerleading’, which is different from the dance-style performances at football games, when she was 18.
The dedicated athlete has also joined the Cheerleading Victoria squad, the Outlaws, and is currently preparing for next year’s world championships in Florida.
‘What I do is very athletic and involves athletics and gymnastics; it’s more athletic and dynamic than the show styles offered,’ she said.
‘It sounds really scary, you’re throwing people around, but it’s very technical and when you know what you’re doing, it’s very safe.
‘I have a couple of favourites. I love doing a double twist. There’s also an inversion like a swan dive in which you’re thrown up and flip at the last minute,’ she said.
Ms Davey, who has been coaching people of all ages through cheerleading for more than six years, said it was rewarding to see students’ abilities grow.
She has 14 students enrolled in the Southern Cross All Star Cheerleading but needs more for the school to start. For information, call 0430 390 301.
